St. Joseph's School for the Blind Opens Doors to Bright, Green and High Tech Future

New York, NY - March 16, 2007 -- Officials for Saint Joseph's School for the Blind, the only school in the state of New Jersey for students with blindness, visual impairment and multiple disabilities, will dedicate sa new $21 million facility on Monday March 19th beginning at 3 p.m. Joining Gerald Kitzhoffer; chief school administrator and members of the SJSB faculty and staff, including noted sports journalist Ed Lucas, will be the Hon. Jerramiah Healy, mayor of Jersey City; New Jersey state assemblyman Lou Manzo; office of Governor John Corzine; and Sharon Held, a senior vice president with Corcoran Group Real Estate and member of the board of directors of SJSB

Grand Opening of new $21 million facility for St. Joseph's School for the Blind, the only school in the entire state of New Jersey for the visually impaired. Founded in 1891, SJSB works to develop students' full potential through highly specialized education, therapeutic intervention, family involvement, and independent living. To that end, SJSB will also dedicate the James D. Held and Sharon A. Held Enrichment and Technology Center where cutting edge adaptive technology including computers, closed circuit television (CCTV), special software and equipment including optical and non-optical low vision devices for reading and writing will be maintained.

In addition to the technology center, the new school, which is situated on 3 acre campus in Jersey City, features 20 fully wired classrooms including music, art and pre-vocational classrooms; an indoor therapeutic swimming pool; student and professional libraries; gymnasium/auditorium; therapy rooms; and adaptive playground. The new school also allows for an expanded core curriculum and services including orientation and mobility, technology, life skills, Braille and job training, speech, physical and occupational therapies. Adjacent to the main academic building is a residential facility for 17 students complete with living and dining rooms, a full kitchen and laundry room as well as a model apartment designed for life skills training.
