Laurel Springs School Honors Seena Hamilton and Creates Scholarship Program in Her Name
Ojai, CA (PRWEB) October 5, 2007 -- Laurel Springs School, the leader in personalized distance learning education for preK-12 students, announced the creation of the Seena Hamilton Scholarship program. The scholarship was designed to benefit extraordinary tennis players who require additional financial support to continue their education. Twenty-five percent of Laurel Springs' students are athletes and attendance has allowed hundreds of junior tennis players to follow their dreams.
This week, Hamilton named Gail Brodsky as the first recipient of the scholarship. At the age of 15, Brodsky, a native of Brooklyn, won the girls 18s Easter Bowl in April.
The award was presented to Hamilton on September 4th and was announced by Marilyn Mosley Gordanier, founder and executive director of Laurel Springs School. "Seena has mentored and cared for so many junior tennis champions. She has also brought to public attention important issues of the game."
Hamilton founded the esteemed Easter Bowl Junior Championships in 1968 which is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2008. Her vision was to provide competitive tennis opportunities for the country's top players in ages 14 - 18. She also produces a one hour prize wining TV special documenting their matches and their lifestyles. The press has credited her with publicizing the relationship between parents and young athletes and what it takes to make a tennis star. Since its inception, the tournament has showcased the future stars of Grand Slams.
Hamilton is considered the most dynamic and influential individual in the history of American junior tennis and for her contributions to the game she was presented with a second USTA award. "What separates the Easter Bowl from other tournaments is that Seena makes it a big family occasion and makes it fun for the entire family, which does not happen frequently in junior tennis. She is one of a kind", says Vijay Amritraj, a former Indian Davis Cupper whose son played the Easter Bowl. Henry Talbert, USTA's executive director of southern California, echoed Amritraj.
"I am deeply touched by the scholarship in my name from Marilyn Mosley Gordanier and Laurel Springs School and the opportunity it gives to offer such a valuable scholarship to a talented junior tennis player. It is a vital contribution. Laurel Springs has benefited so many youngsters, many of whom have gone on to Ivy League colleges. They would not have been able to compete without this outstanding online learning program. We are delighted to present Brodsky with the first scholarship," said Seena Hamilton.
