RECLAIM Honours Family Literacy Day with Fundraiser
Montréal, Québec, (PRWEB) January 21, 2008 -- On Sunday, January 27, 2008, the RECLAIM Literacy Council is hosting its annual benefit, 'Oodles and Oodles of Noodles', at 5:00 p.m. at Brasserie Des Rapides: 7852 Boul. Champlain in Lasalle, (located in Place Lasalle Shopping Centre). With the event, RECLAIM intends to raise awareness for Family Literacy Day and funds for its family literacy programs.
Family Literacy Day is an ABC Canada national initiative geared at promoting the importance of reading and learning as a family, (www.abc-canada.org/fld/). "Low literacy is normally generational," says Joy Fyckes, RECLAIM's Executive Director. "If parents don't read, there is little chance that they will promote reading to their children."
According to the Adult Literacy and Life Skills Survey (2005), Quebec has more adults with low literacy than the national average. Thirty per cent of adults in Quebec find it challenging to decode a traffic sign, use a bank machine, or read their child a bedtime story. In Montréal, 40 per cent of high school students are estimated to drop out yearly. "The first step in eradicating low literacy and encouraging learning is promoting books in the home and having family reading time," explains Fyckes.
The public is invited to RECLAIM literacy for all by attending the event. For $10 per ticket, guests will indulge in pasta and sweets and receive treats at the door.
